I worry about our students networking and the dangers of the Internet. We as educators need to educate parents and students on Internet Safety. This should be a class that students take and programs/videos should be in place for the students to be aware of what could happen.
Parents also need to be involved in a course to let them know what measures they can use on their own computers for the safety of their children. Hopefully more schools will provide this Internet Safety Program for students and parents.
I think you have a great point about providing internet safety programs for students and parents. A school-wide Acceptable Use Contract is a great way to start this dialogue. Several parents mentioned that signing our school’s acceptable use contract started important conversations at home regarding internet safety and proper use.
Internet Safety is something that is definitely a big topic now days. We can no longer close our eyes to the dangers that exist from using the internet. Many initiatives have and are currently being made to teach this better. Parents especially should be learning more and teaching this in the home. Ignorance on this topic can have disastrous results.
This is a big concern of mine. You see things on telelvision all of the time about the dangers. More needs to be done to educate parents and teachers about ways to keep kids safe.
